Urticaria / Allergy Care

Urticaria, commonly known as hives, is a skin reaction that causes itchy welts. It can be triggered by allergies, infections, stress, or physical factors. Proper management and avoidance of triggers can help control symptoms and improve quality of life.

Causes

  • Allergic reactions: Foods (nuts, seafood, eggs, milk, wheat, soy, additives), medications (NSAIDs, aspirin, antibiotics, ACE inhibitors), insect bites/stings, latex, certain plants (poison ivy, nettles).
  • Physical triggers: Heat, cold, sunlight, pressure from tight clothing, sweat, skin friction.
  • Infections: Viral, bacterial, fungal, or parasitic infections.
  • Chemicals: Cosmetics, rubber, cleaning agents.
  • Other factors: Stress, anxiety, inadequate sleep, autoimmune diseases, and sometimes no identifiable cause.

Do’s

  • Identify and avoid triggers: Keep a diary to help pinpoint foods, medications, or situations that cause flare-ups.
  • Use antihistamines: Take as prescribed to relieve itching and swelling.
  • Moisturize skin: Use gentle, fragrance-free moisturizers to reduce irritation.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing: Avoid pressure and friction on the skin.
  • Manage stress: Practice relaxation techniques to reduce flare-ups.
  • Seek medical help for severe symptoms: If you experience swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or difficulty breathing, seek emergency care immediately.
  • Follow your doctor’s treatment plan: Adhere to prescribed medications and advice.

Don’ts

  • Don’t scratch the rash: Scratching can worsen irritation and increase infection risk.
  • Don’t use harsh soaps or hot water: These can aggravate symptoms; use mild cleansers and lukewarm water.
  • Don’t ignore new or worsening symptoms: Especially if you develop breathing difficulties or swelling in the mouth/throat.
  • Don’t self-medicate with unknown remedies: Always consult a healthcare provider before trying new treatments.
  • Don’t wear tight clothing: Avoid anything that causes pressure or friction on your skin.
