Leucorrhea (White Discharge)

Leucorrhea is vaginal discharge that is usually clear or whitish and helps maintain vaginal health. While normal leucorrhea is common, abnormal discharge may indicate infection or imbalance.

Normal Leucorrhea

  • Color: Clear or milky white.
  • Odor: Mild or no smell.
  • Consistency: Thin or slightly sticky.
  • Occurs during: Ovulation, pregnancy, puberty, or hormonal changes.

Abnormal Leucorrhea

  • Color: Yellow, green, gray, or brownish.
  • Odor: Strong, foul, or fishy.
  • Consistency: Thick, clumpy, frothy, or very sticky.
  • Accompanied by: Itching, burning, swelling, or pain.

Causes

  • Normal hormonal changes (ovulation, puberty, pregnancy).
  • Hormonal imbalance (estrogen fluctuations).
  • Infections: bacterial vaginosis, yeast infection, STIs.
  • Other factors: diabetes, antibiotics, birth control, poor hygiene, douching, scented products.

Do’s

  • Maintain daily hygiene with plain water; keep the area dry.
  • Wear breathable cotton underwear and change daily.
  • Practice safe sex to avoid infections.
  • Stay hydrated and eat a balanced diet to support immunity.
  • Consult a doctor if discharge changes color, odor, or consistency.

Don’ts

  • Avoid douching or scented soaps/sprays.
  • Don’t wear tight, synthetic underwear for long durations.
  • Don’t ignore persistent abnormal discharge.
  • Don’t self-medicate for vaginal infections without diagnosis.

Diet Tips

  • Include probiotic-rich foods (yogurt, fermented foods).
  • Eat fresh fruits and vegetables for vitamins and antioxidants.
  • Limit sugar and refined carbs to prevent yeast overgrowth.
  • Drink enough water to flush out toxins.
  • Consider natural antifungal foods (garlic, turmeric).
