Sinusitis Care

Sinusitis, commonly called "sinus," is the inflammation of the tissues lining the sinuses— air-filled spaces behind your cheeks, forehead, and eyes. This condition leads to symptoms like facial pain or pressure, blocked or runny nose, headache, reduced sense of smell, cough, and sometimes fever or toothache. While most cases are caused by viruses, bacteria, allergies, or irritants can also trigger sinusitis.

Causes

  • Viral infections
  • Bacterial infections
  • Fungal infections
  • Allergies
  • Structural abnormalities
  • Enlarged adenoids
  • Dental infections

Do’s

  • Rest and stay hydrated with plenty of fluids.
  • Use saline nasal rinses to clear mucus and reduce congestion.
  • Take painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen if needed (avoid aspirin in children under 16).
  • Avoid allergy triggers such as dust, pollen, smoke, or irritants.
  • Keep your environment humidified with a humidifier.
  • Consult a doctor if symptoms persist beyond 7–10 days or worsen.

Don’ts

  • Don’t overuse nasal decongestant sprays (limit use to 3–4 days).
  • Don’t take antibiotics unless prescribed—most cases are viral.
  • Don’t smoke or expose yourself to second-hand smoke.
  • Don’t ignore severe symptoms like high fever, vision changes, or severe headache.

Dietary Guidance

  • Eat a balanced diet with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
  • Stay hydrated with warm teas, broths, and water to thin mucus.
  • Consume warm fluids like soups and herbal teas to relieve congestion.
  • Limit dairy if it worsens mucus production for you.
  • Avoid processed and sugary foods that increase inflammation.
  • Include anti-inflammatory foods like garlic, ginger, turmeric, and vitamin C-rich foods (oranges, strawberries, peppers).
