Adenoids Care

Adenoids are a patch of lymphatic tissue located at the back of the nasal cavity. They help fight infections in children but may become enlarged due to recurrent infections or allergies. Enlarged adenoids can cause breathing difficulties, snoring, ear infections, nasal speech, and sleep disturbances.

Causes

  • Recurrent respiratory infections
  • Allergies
  • Bacterial or viral throat infections
  • Chronic sinusitis
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Exposure to smoke or pollutants

Do’s

  • Encourage the child to breathe through the nose instead of the mouth.
  • Maintain good hydration to keep the throat and airways moist.
  • Keep the living environment dust-free and well-ventilated.
  • Use saline nasal sprays or rinses to ease nasal congestion.
  • Ensure proper sleep routine to aid recovery and immunity.
  • Consult a doctor if symptoms persist or worsen.

Don’ts

  • Don’t ignore persistent mouth breathing, snoring, or ear infections.
  • Don’t expose the child to cigarette smoke or strong pollutants.
  • Don’t delay treatment if speech problems or sleep apnea symptoms appear.
  • Don’t self-medicate with antibiotics unless prescribed by a doctor.
  • Don’t overlook frequent sore throats or nasal blockages.

Dietary Guidance

  • Provide a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables to boost immunity.
  • Encourage warm soups, broths, and herbal teas to soothe the throat.
  • Include natural anti-inflammatory foods like turmeric, ginger, and garlic.
  • Avoid cold drinks, ice creams, and excessively chilled foods.
  • Limit processed foods and refined sugars that may lower immunity.
  • Incorporate vitamin C-rich foods (oranges, amla, guava) to prevent infections.
