Recurrent Tonsillitis Care

Recurrent tonsillitis involves repeated inflammation or infection of the tonsils, often due to bacterial (commonly Streptococcus) or viral infections. Susceptibility may be influenced by genetic factors or immune system differences.

Causes

  • Bacterial or viral infections (commonly streptococcal bacteria)
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Close contact with infected individuals
  • Weakened immune system
  • Environmental irritants (dust, allergens, pollution)

Do’s

  • Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing teeth and tongue, flossing, and using mouthwash regularly.
  • Wash hands frequently, especially before eating and after using the bathroom.
  • Avoid sharing drinks, utensils, or toothbrushes to prevent infection spread.
  • Eat a balanced diet rich in nutrient-dense foods to support immune function.
  • Stay hydrated with plenty of fluids, such as warm teas and soups, to soothe the throat.
  • Ensure adequate rest and manage stress to strengthen immunity.
  • Consult an ENT specialist for frequent infections to evaluate and manage the condition.

Don’ts

  • Don’t have close contact with individuals who are sick.
  • Don’t smoke or use tobacco, as they irritate the throat and delay healing.
  • Don’t consume alcohol or carbonated drinks, which can irritate and dehydrate the throat.
  • Don’t eat spicy, acidic, or rough foods that worsen throat pain and inflammation.
  • Don’t consume hard, crunchy, or dry foods (e.g., chips, crackers, nuts) that may scratch swollen tonsils.
  • Don’t rely on processed or sugary foods, as they can promote inflammation.

Dietary Guidance

  • Eat soft, easy-to-swallow foods like mashed potatoes, porridge, oatmeal, boiled or steamed vegetables, soups, broths, yogurt (if tolerated), bananas, peaches, warm teas (ginger, chamomile), and honey (if not allergic).
  • Avoid hard, crunchy foods (e.g., chips, crackers, toast, granola, raw vegetables, nuts, seeds).
  • Avoid spicy foods (e.g., hot peppers, spicy seasonings).
  • Avoid acidic foods (e.g., citrus fruits, tomatoes, vinegar).
  • Avoid fried foods, junk foods, and dairy (if it increases mucus).
  • Avoid alcohol, carbonated drinks, smoking, and tobacco.
